SLEEP ON YOUR SIDE FOR BRAIN HEALTH!

YOUR sleep position could be putting your brain at risk, scientists warn.

Whether you lie on your back, side or facedown may affect your chances of developing motor neuron diseases, according to researchers studying the glymphatic system, which removes waste from the brain. This network of fluid-filled spaces is mostly switched off while we’re awake. But it kicks into gear during slumber to distribute compounds needed for the organ’s function and to eliminate toxic waste.

As we age, sleep quality declines, which experts say increases the risk of deadly neurogenerative conditions — including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

But the new study involving mice from researchers in Australia uncovered the first evidence suggesting the glymphatic system might be a potential therapeutic target to treat ALS.

The study also found glymphatic clearance is best in side-sleeping positions — compared to lying on the back or facedown — likely due to the effects of gravity, compression and tissue stretching.
